Wood is one of the trusted materials to use in pallets and strengthen integrity. Moreover, it is a highly durable material that makes the storage and transport of goods easy. However, you need to address the maintenance of the hardwood pallets and prevent the wood from rotting. The period of storage is one of the key considerations that determine the shelf life of the pallet. Usually, the adverse effect of the weather elements do not show during short-term storage of the pallets even if they stay out, but long-term storage has significant effects, such as rotting.

Prevention of wooden pallet rotting

If you are planning to store the pallets for long periods, read the tips below to keep them safe.

  • Circulation of air

You can store pallets in the outdoors for long periods, but make sure that adequate air flows through them to make the boards dry. However, even the hardware pallets can start rotting in damp and tight areas indoors.

  • Rotating the wooden stock

When storing new pallets, it is necessary to alternate the older pallets that are present in the storage before choosing the new options.

  • Placing the pallets

The bottom pallet on the ground succumbs rotting in the bottom boards when stored for long periods. However, if you place the pallets above the ground, you will let them stay dry during the humid days and enhance the life of the stock.

  • Moving the stock

If you need to keep the pallets intact for long periods unused, move them from top to bottom as it helps in changing their position and protect them from highly moist and humid conditions.

Determining the rot

If you store hardwood pallets and eager to find out whether it is rotten or not, using a hammer to hit the boards is the right thing to do. Rotten boards will break easily when you hit them with a hammer.

Prevention of mould

With natural hardwood pallets, mould growth is hard to stop. The development of fungal mould can affect the construction or make of the pallet and contaminate the material and stick from inside. Apart from this, mould can also result in asthma and other issues of the lung and the respiratory system. Therefore, you need to note the steps to prevent the formation of mould.

  • Mould requires the appropriate temperature to thrive, water, oxygen, and food. While you cannot control oxygen and the temperature keeps fluctuating, the best way to prevent the growth of mould on the wooden pallets is to limit the source of food. The right course of action is to make the stock free from moisture and here you are making mould growth impossible.
  • Apart from this, rotation and movement of the stocks also let you detect the development of mould easily. The sooner you find out the presence of mould, the better it is to take the right action for the prevention of mould.

Stopping moisture content

When using wooden pallets, whether made from wet or green wood, you need to control the moisture content. Leaving the pallets outdoors encourage the growth of mould. Thanks to the chemical treatments that prevent and destroy the spores of fungus on the pallets. There are several eco-friendly wood treatments available today and made from the extracts of natural plants. However, the anti-mould treatment you need to apply on the wooden material depends on the type of wood and the storage place.
