What Do The Fire Extinguisher Signs Denote?

Fire Extinguisher Sign

There are 6 different types of fire extinguishers signs that are categorised as per different materials.

Class A – Plastic, rubber, paper, wood, cloth;

Class B – Flammable liquids;

Class C – Combustible gases;

Class D – Flammable metals like potassium, magnesium, etc;

Class E – Electrical pieces of equipment;

Class F – Cooking oils like fats and vegetable oil.

The most common way to remember using a fire extinguisher is to remember the acronym PASS: Pull The Pin, Aim The Nozzle, Squeeze and Sweep from side to side. These instructions are easy to remember and can be very helpful to put out the fire. The location of the fire extinguisher is quite crucial as well.

The fire extinguishers need to have proper signs in the locations they are placed so they can be recognised easily. There are different types of fire extinguisher signs that can be identified instantly. Different fires are put out by different extinguishers and thus wall signs are recommended to be used. A few important fire extinguisher signs are as follows:

Fire Hydrant Signs

Fire hydrant signs are among the most common ones as they indicate people about where the fire hydrants are so their entry is not blocked when the situation comes for the fire staff to access the hydrant.

Sprinkler Valve Sign

These are quite crucial to install in the buildings as they tell the firefighters about where the valves are. Firefighters, in such cases, can easily spot the valves and correctly use them to their advantage.

Emergency Exit Sign

These do not require much thought process behind them as the name easily suggests what it is for. They are applied to the places that can be used as an emergency exit when there is a fire in the building. These are usually installed in the safest areas.

Fire Alarm Call Point

When a fire erupts in the building, everyone needs to know about it so they can leave the premises as soon as possible. To alarm everyone, there is a fire alarm installed in the building and a fire alarm call sign just above it. It makes the work easier for people to identify and press the alarm to warn everyone as soon as there is a fire.

In The Event of Fire Sign

These are mostly applied everywhere but they are often overlooked. These signs have short and precise instructions regarding the steps to be taken in case a fire erupts.

Installing The Fire Extinguisher Signs

There are certain rules and regulations that need to adhere to the Australian standards and you need to make sure to keep these in mind:

  1. In compliance with AS2444, fire extinguisher identification signs should be placed above or adjacent to the extinguisher.
  2. A location sign within a minimum of 2000mm should be positioned from the floor.
  3. In case the wall is in a poor condition, stick the sign with double-sided tape for extra security. Other efficient ways are applying glue or fixing the metal signs with screws.
  4. A sign should not be installed at a place that can be obstructed by a door or any other furniture. It should be clearly visible.
  5. You also need to install evacuation diagrams in your building so people know what to do during unfortunate times.

The aforementioned fire extinguisher signs are just some of the many. You can get all of them at a quality fire factory store. Make sure to go for the metal ones as plastic can wear out sooner.
